Are you as excited about it being the first of the "ber" months as I am??? Happy September peeps. I have been waiting all year for this time of year. It's been a while since the last blog, but life. I thought now was a good time to put this one out. I'm literally shooting the first booked fall session for the season this evening. A lot of times the most asked question after booking a fall family session is: "What should we wear?" Well peeps, let's break it down. Here are 5 tips that I pass on to clients on how to put together your outfits for family photos.
Tip #1: Choose 1 piece of clothing that has pattern with 2 - 3 colors you want to center the rest of the family's choices around. For example have dad wear a plaid flannel shirt. Use the colors of the flannel to pick pieces of clothing for the kids and mom. So if dad's flannel has a base color of tan with black and rust accents, pick a dress that is a rust color for mom, maybe jeans and plain black shirt for one little and maybe a dress or top for the other little that is tan. Build from dad's flannel!
Tip #2: Keep it simple. You want patterns to add some texture to your pix. But maybe stick to no more than one or two people wearing something with pattern that we can separate while shooting in poses. Make sure the colors work as well. Also, in my opinion, I'd stick to one person with pattern on their clothes if there is only 3 people in your family. ;)
Tip #3: Accessorize!!!!! Sometimes you can make a plain Henly on a little guy look like it's straight from fashion week by adding a little puffer vest to his outfit. Or a chunky necklace on a little girl. Hats, scarves, cardigans. These are all things that can change the way the eyes are drawn and make people pop in their pix.
Tip #4: This could probably be filed under tip #3 but I feel like it deserves its own section. SHOES!!! Guys pay attention to find shoes that go with what you're wearing. I'd stay away from sneakers with characters on them for the kids. ;) I know they love them and sometimes the fight is not worth it, but if you can talk them into something that goes better with what they're wearing, definitely do it!!
And finally . . .
Tip #5: Whatever you find and decide to wear. Make sure you are comfortable in it. I'm telling you. If you are uncomfortable in what you've chosen to wear, (crazy high heels, flip flops that aren't broken in . . .) the camera will capture it on your face and body posture. I especially offer the "whatever you wear make sure it's comfortable speech" to my expecting Mommas! After all, I aim to make your session fun and if you can't twirl in those heels, we can't have fun! LOL!!!
I like to keep these blogs short and sweet! But before I close this one out, another good resource to help you find some outfits for your session is Pinterest. They have these fabulous color pallets of clothing. Check out the link below to one of my boards that I've collected a few on!
